pH Balanced Shampoos

We are all aware of term “pH” and the need to have a balanced pH in order to maintain the health of our body, skin and hair. But what exactly is pH and how does it work?

https://www.dreamstime.com/stock-photo-ph-scale-image15538980The abbreviation, pH (small p with a capital H) stands for potential Hydrogen. It is a well-recognized method for measuring the acidity or alkalinity of a liquid which is critical to maintaining and living a healthy life.

pH levels are assigned a number and measured against a pH scale with numbers that range from 0 to 14. 0 to 6.9 is considered an acidic measurement and 7.1 to 14 is alkaline. Distilled water will have a pH of 7, which is considered neutral. Concentrated hydrochloric acid is extremely corrosive and has a pH of 0, whereas liquid drain cleaner, another highly corrosive product, will have a pH of 14. Extremes on either side of neutral can be very damaging. A balanced pH level is one that melds most easily with normal pH of our skin and hair.

Our skin and hair have a pH level between 4.5 and 5.5. This is about as acidic as black coffee but it is important for our health. It is the slightly acidic nature of our skin and hair is what helps us retain moisture. If we use products that are too high or too low on the pH scale, we damage our skin and hair. But since we need products that are strong enough to remove oils and dirt, how do we know if they are too strong?

Most professional hair care products are pH balanced. This means that their pH level falls within the 5.5 to 6.5 range for shampoos while conditioners will generally fall between 4.0 and 5.0. This makes them strong enough to adequately remove excess oils and dirt without doing damage to our skin or hair. Since a number of products do not actually list a pH number on their package, if you have concerns about what you are using you can test the product using litmus papers that are easily purchased at any drug store.

All of Dreamline Beauty’s shampoos and conditioners are pH balanced. We also have a number of shampoos that are sulfate- and sodium chloride-free. And our entire line of products are 100% paraben-free.
